Lake County Forest Preserves right in our backyard!

Lake County Forest Preserves right in our backyard!

We have a treasure right here in Lake County, our Forest Preserves. The Lake County Forest Preserves offer residents summer entertainment, fresh produce, conservation efforts, educational programming, recreation and a museum! The Lake County Forest Preserve District is nearly 31,000 acres and the second largest Forest Preserve District in Illinois.

Here are some program highlights:

  • A program beginning in August, is the Hike Lake County Challenge. This program allows you to explore the Lake County trails by keeping a log and earning a commemorative shield or zipper pull. Check out the link for more information
  • Public programs include tour of the Adlai E. Stevenson Home, Family Fishing, Monarch Butterflies and Meet the authors.
  • The Dunn Museum, located in Libertyville, is among only three percent nationally to have earned accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. The Dunn Museum is names for Bess Bower Dunn (1877-1959), Lake county’s first historian.
  • We have a ton of recreation at the Forest Preserve sites. You can use the marina, paddle boat, fish, horseback riding, swimming, bike rentals and golf.
